A 67-year-old man died Saturday night after being accidentally shot in a hunting accident in Lincoln County, officials said.

Daniel Wilson was scouting deer and looking at squirrels on family property when he was struck by a gunshot, according to Lincoln County Coroner Farris Marcum. Wilson later died at Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford.

A father and son were taking part in a youth hunt on the same property when the accident occurred. The teenager shot at what he thought was a deer and struck Wilson, Marcum said.

Wilson was shot in the leg, but his injuries proved deadly due to severe blood loss.

“Of course his injury did sever a major artery in his leg. A large amount of blood loss,” Marcum said.

Marcum said he has never been called to a deadly hunting accident in his 16 years as coroner.

“Very, very tragic accident. I know the family personally,” Marcum said.

Wilson’s son said his father taught him that safety came first when hunting and to never fire unless you were 100% sure of what you were shooting at.

Family members described Wilson as someone who loved the outdoors and loved the Lord. His son said Wilson was a good teacher and would want to use what happened to him to teach others.

The family is still working out funeral arrangements.
