An Indiana man is accused of killing two pet dogs with archery arrows while he was deer hunting.

According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, 58-year-old John Lowe has been charged with two felony counts of animal cruelty along with felony obstruction of justice.

Lowe’s son, 22-year-old Hayden Lowe, has also been charged with felony obstruction of justice.

The South Bend Tribune reports the two men were hunting on Oct. 21 on private property when another hunter in the same woods heard two dogs, a beagle and a chocolate Labrador retriever, making noise as they were moving through the woods.

The third hunter reportedly told police that he then heard the dogs start yelping and whimpering loudly.

When they climbed down the tree to investigate, he allegedly spotted John and Hayden Lowe dragging the body of the Labrador on a walking path.

According to the report, the hunter told police that John Lowe told them that they were looking for a place to discard the dog.

When questioned later by investigators, John Lowe reportedly admitted to shooting the dogs, claiming they were aggressive. But police said evidence suggested he may have shot them from a tree stand.

John Lowe and his son are accused of also destroying a GPS collar on the beagle to hide its location, but police said the owner of the dogs found the dog’s body by going to the spot where it was last detected.

Each count filed against the men carries a potential sentence of six to 30 months, authorities said.
