A Nappanee man was shot in the head and neck while turkey hunting Saturday morning in Fulton County in what Indiana conservation officers called an accident.

Indiana conservation officers say Brian Lehman, 41, of Nappanee, was walking with a juvenile hunter just before 6:20 a.m. Saturday on a farm lane near County Road 375 North and County Road 100 West. That’s a three-way intersection in a rural area near the Tippecanoe River and about 4 miles northwest of the northern Indiana city of Rochester.

A nearby hunter mistook Lehman’s movement for a turkey and fired in his direction with a 12-gauge shotgun.

The juvenile was not injured, but Lehman was hit.

A helicopter took Lehman to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he was treated and released. Rochester is about a 50-minute drive south of downtown South Bend.

A news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources did not describe the extent of Lehman’s injuries.

As of Tuesday morning, the incident remained under investigation.
