14-year-old killed in apparent hunting accident

VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind.  – Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an apparent hunting accident, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old male of Vermillion County, Indiana.

On Friday, October 15, 2010, the Parke County Sheriff’s Department received a call reporting a possible dead body in a harvested cornfield near County Road 40 North, approximately halfway between Rockville and Montezuma.

Conservation Officers located the body near an elevated, tripod-style hunting stand. The cause of death was determined to be from a gunshot wound.

The victim had reportedly been hunting the previous day on property owned by a family member.

Due to unintentional miscommunication among family members, the victim was not considered to be missing until midday Friday when the search was initiated, resulting in the discovery of the victim’s body.

Conservation Officers are interviewing persons having knowledge of the victim’s recent activities. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, October 16 at 1 p.m. at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

Parke County Coroner Jerry Pearcy and Parke County Sheriff’s Detective Justin Cole assisted at the scene.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members
