The search for a man who fell into a frozen pond Monday in New Baden, Illinois, has ended in tragedy after sources announced a body has been found.
The victim has been identified as Luke Kitterman, 23, of New Memphis, Illinois. On Monday, the St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency told FOX 2 that Kitterman was attempting to rescue his dog that was on the ice near Clinton County Line Road and Renth Road.
Officials said Kitterman—who was hunting with five others at the time—fell and was submerged under the ice. Dive teams and fire crews deployed a 360-degree sonar scan, which is capable of searching up to 150 feet around the vessel. As divers raced against the clock, the frigid temperatures created challenges.
“They are wearing personal floatation devices, if that way, if they did go through the ice, at least they had some protective equipment on to recover them and bring them back to the shore,” said Les Crews, Assistant Fire Chief for the Monarch Fire Protection District.
