On Tuesday, April 11, 2023, Raoul Brown pleaded guilty to felony Involuntary Manslaughter in Clearwater County after he shot and killed 38-year-old Lanae Tackely during a hunting incident in October of last year.

According to the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medical crews responded to the area of South Dicks Creek and Teakean Butte at approximately 4:14 p.m. on October 15 after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies found 38-year-old Lanae A. Tackely on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Big Country News Connection, Brown told deputies on scene that he had been attempting to shoot an elk when Tackely allegedly walked in front of the rifle.

Brown was arrested on scene and initially charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, a felony, Possession of a Controlled Substance, a felony, and Injuring Another by Careless Handling and Discharging of a Firearm, a misdemeanor. During an arraignment held in November, Brown pleaded not guilty to all charges.

On Tuesday, Brown changed his plea for the Involuntary Manslaughter charge to Guilty, and in turn had all other charges dropped, according to court records.

A jury trial scheduled for later this month has been vacated and Brown is now scheduled to be sentenced by a judge on June 27.

CLEARWATER COUNTY – On Saturday, October 15, at approximately 4:14 p.m., deputies with the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office and medics with Clearwater County Ambulance responded to the area of South Dicks Creek and Teakean Butte after receiving reports of a shooting.

First arriving deputies arrived on scene to find 38-year-old Lanae A. Tackely, deceased from a gunshot wound.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Big Country News Connection, Brown told deputies on scene that he had been attempting to shoot an elk when Tackely allegedly walked in front of the rifle.

On scene deputies also located 36-year-old Raoul R. Brown, who was subsequently arrested. According to police, Brown is being charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Possession of methamphetamine, and Injuring Another by Careless Handling and Discharging of Firearm.
