SANDY, OR (KPTV) –

A hunter was found slumped over a fence in Clackamas County on Friday in what appears to be an accidental shooting.

Clackamas County deputies said the investigation is still in its early stages, but they said it appears the man’s rifle went off while he was trying to climb over the fence to get from one property to another.

The man died at the scene, deputies said.

Investigators first got word of the shooting on 52780 Southeast Marmot Road in Sandy around 1:30 p.m.

FOX 12 has learned that many of the properties alongside this stretch of Marmot Road are posted as private, which means they are not allowed to be hunted on.

Deputies can not confirm whether or not the victim was on private property, or trespassing at the time he was climbing the fence.

“It’s really sad, and it just reminds you that hunter safety is a big thing,” said Dan Teneyck, who lives on Marmot Road.

“You always have to make sure you clear your rifle before you go through a fence.”

Deputies would not say if the victim lives in Sandy. They are currently working to notify his next of kin.
