Hunters gear up for firearms deer season

Hunters are already allowed to hunt deer with bows and muzzle loaders, but starting tomorrow rifles are added to that list

ALBANY, GA — Hunters are already allowed to hunt deer with bows and muzzle loaders, but starting tomorrow rifles are added to that list.

Southwest Georgians of all ages have been gearing up for firearm deer season’s kick off. Officials say about 300,000 people will be hunting throughout the state this weekend.

Last year there were 45 hunting accidents; 14 involving firearms. DNR Ranger Randy James says it’s important to brush up on safety guidelines before heading out. “Wear your bright orange and make sure you’re aware of your target and what’s around it,” says James.

Firearm season lasts through mid-January, but not all hunters are planning on using rifles this year. DNR officials say they will be out this weekend making sure everyone’s staying safe and obeying the laws.
