On Sept. 6, emergency dispatchers received notification via a Garmin InReach device about a hunter who had collapsed on Lincoln Creek Road.

Coordinates from the InReach device showed that the hunter was about 2.7 miles past Grizzly Reservoir on Lincoln Creek Road. The hunter’s guide was administering CPR.

The first rescue team made contact with the patient. Sadly, after an initial evaluation, it was evident the patient was deceased. The rescue teams worked with the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office and the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office for further operations.

The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office thanks Mountain Rescue Aspen, the Aspen Ambulance District, the Aspen Fire Protection District, and Careflight of the Rockies for their “quick and professional” response to the mission.

In a Facebook post, Mountain Rescue Aspen writes that “those venturing into the backcountry are advised to know and operate within their limits.” They also remind outdoor recreationists that rescues in the backcountry can be lengthy because of the challenging terrain.
