A cow elk was shot and killed near Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park on Wednesday, park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson said.

It is illegal to hunt in Rocky Mountain National Park, and also illegal to discharge a firearm. Also, there are no elk hunting seasons currently open in Colorado.

Last August, Boulder police officer Sam Carter was sentenced to four years of probation and 200 hours of community service and must pay $10,200 in state wildlife fines after poaching Boulder’s beloved Mapleton Hill elk.
