A Paris resident and two residents of Ayr have been fined a total of $10,500 after pleading guilty to bird hunting offences.
A news release from the Ontario government said it’s “safeguarding waterfowl bird populations against unsafe and illegal hunting practices.”
Gregory Adam of Ayr was fined $5,000 for hunting migratory birds within 400 metres of where bait had been deposited, as well as killing more than the daily bag limit of ducks.
Fletcher Adam of Ayr was fined $3,000 for hunting migratory birds within 400 metres of where bait had been deposited.
Garreth Morgan of Paris was fined $2,500 for hunting migratory birds within 400 metres for the same charge.
All three men are prohibited from applying for a migratory game bird hunting permit for a year.
The court heard that on Sept. 19, 2024, conservation officers were conducting inspections in the area of Wrigley Road in the Region of Waterloo and found submerged oats in a small pond.
The officers returned to the area on the morning of Sept. 28, 2024 and contacted the hunters at an adjacent pond. The investigation determined they were hunting ducks where the oats had been submerged. Ducks were seized and forfeited to the crown.
