According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), a 26-year-old driver has been arrested following a series of illegal road hunting incidents in rural Paso Robles.
The first incident happened when a CDFW wildlife officer on patrol stopped a Honda Civic due to increased poaching reports.
The officer noticed blood on the trunk, bumper, and license plate and instructed the driver to open the trunk.
Inside the trunk, the officer found a wounded tom turkey and squirrel, suspected to be victims of illegal road hunting.
The second incident happened about two weeks later when another wildlife officer encountered a similar situation with a Chevy Malibu.
The driver and two passengers admitted having a hen and a tom turkey in the trunk, and a .22 caliber rifle on the rear floorboard.
The driver, previously cited for road hunting, was arrested on suspicion of unlawful wildlife hunting and other violations.
Felony animal cruelty charges were recommended, and bail was set at $20,000.
Both cases are now with the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
