Auburn police: Man accidentally shoots self on way to hunting trip
AUBURN, CA – A man on his way to a hunting trip accidentally shot himself in the left hand and groin, according to authorities.
Auburn police Sgt. Dale Hutchins said 49-year-old David Willoughby, of Willits, suffered the self-inflicted gunshot while en route to Nevada with a friend. Police received the shooting call just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday on eastbound Interstate 80 between Elm Avenue and Foresthill Road.
Willoughby was transported to a Sutter Roseville hospital for treatment of his injuries believed to be non-life threatening, said Hutchins.
It was unclear how the accidental shooting took place. Hutchins said investigators were looking into what lead up to the incident.
