A 57-year-old man was accidentally shot and killed by his friend during a hunting trip at a plantation in Mudan, along Jalan Oya/Igan, yesterday.
According to Dalat police chief DSP Saga Chunggat, the suspect claimed that he had mistaken the victim for a wild boar.
“Thirteen people went out hunting at the plantation as early as 7am.
“Around 5.15pm, the suspect saw what he thought was a wild boar in the bush and fired at it.
“Upon checking, he discovered it was his hunting companion, who was lying in a pool of blood,” Saga said in a statement.
The group immediately rushed the victim, who is believed to have died at the scene or en route to the Mukah police station.
Dalat police were alerted to the incident at 7.52pm, as the location of the incident fell under their jurisdiction.
“Our initial investigation revealed that the suspect admitted to firing a shot at what he believed was a wild boar,” Saga added.
The suspect had used a homemade shotgun in the incident.
The victim’s body was sent to Mukah Hospital for a post-mortem examination, while the suspect is currently in remand for further investigation.
