A man is fighting for life after he was shot in the chest during a hunting trip in south west Queensland.

The man, aged in his 50s, was taken to Cunnamulla Hospital, 790 km west of Brisbane, about 8.30pm on Tuesday in a critical condition.

He was later flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane by the Royal Flying Doctor Service for further treatment.

The man was with a group of men hunting for feral pigs on a private property when he was accidentally shot.

The hunters had been riding on the back of a four-by-four when the vehicle hit a bump.

One was thrown from the rear tray and his loaded rifle discharged as he hit the ground with the bullet hitting another man in the torso.
