Oakland Co. man accidentally kills Alaskan during guided bear hunt

A 51-year-old West Bloomfield doctor accidentally killed a man from former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s hometown during a hunt on Sunday in Alaska, officials said today.

According to the Alaska State Police, Ralph Delius fatally shot Bret Millo, 50, of Wasilla, Alaska, at approximately 10:30 p.m. during a guided brown-bear hunt on Sunday. Troopers were summoned to the head of the Bradfield Canal near Wrangell around 1:30 a.m.

Delius is a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon at Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, the hospital confirmed this morning.

“We are aware of the news of this tragic accident and our thoughts are with everyone involved,” hospital spokeswoman Anika Corbett said.

There was no indication of foul play, police said. The state Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
