A 13-year-old boy that was accidentally shot while dove hunting near Hurricane Shoals Park on Saturday night is doing well — but faces more surgery and a long recovery, according to his father.

Colin Hitzges sustained a shotgun wound to his left ankle as a dove hunt was finishing, according to his father, Jamie Hitzges.

Colin was taken by helicopter to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he underwent six hours of surgery to repair the damage to his ankle and install a stabilizing halo in his leg at his ankle. Surgeons also removed a vein from his upper thigh and grafted it into the ankle area to re-establish blood flow.
