Authorities early Monday recovered the body of a missing 9-year-old boy who was thrown from a caregiver’s boat into the St. Johns River during a fishing trip Saturday near East Palatka in Putnam County.

The body of Jonathan “Tate” Ricks was found about 5 a.m. near where the accident occurred, said Maj. Johnny Greenwood of the Sheriff’s Office.

The boy and his grandmother’s boyfriend were knocked into the water when their boat capsized when struck by the wake of a larger boat in the river near the U.S. 17 Memorial Bridge.

The boyfriend, who is in his 50s, tried unsuccessfully to help the boy.
After making it to shore, the man was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
