Fairfax County for Humane Deer Management

As most of you are aware, the bow hunting in Colvin Mill Stream Valley began today. Although it is at the least frustrating to some, and heartbreaking to others, it is now more important than ever to continue efforts to reach the right people who have the influence and ability to at minimum put this hunt on hold or have it cancelled. We have put forth great effort to address the issue from the ground up, it is now time to work from the top down.

The efforts to date have resulted in pretty extraordinary results given the short amount of time we have had, the lack of even minimal responses from the county and no response from the Board of Supervisors. Questions remain unanswered, public safety issues remain unaddressed and the justification for this activity is paltry at best.

It is human nature to have the effort to rally for a short amount of time, and a fact of life that we all have lives to attend to, work to complete, families to care for and that time is precious. Nevertheless, it is all the more important that we not only continue our efforts, but seek other venues in which to be heard. The County must understand that these concerns, objections and demands for real, feasible solutions will continue until they are addressed.

To that end, we ask each of you to contact the following TODAY:

1) Your auto insurance agent/company – inquire as to whether they were made aware of the hunt and the increased risk of deer-vehicle collisions so that they might have had the opportunity to alert drivers.

2) Delegate Margi Vanderhye
Virginia House of Delegates, 34th District
703-448-8018 – District Office
804-698-1034 – Richmond Office (during legislative session)

3) Virginia Senator, District 34:
Chap Peterson
Local: (703) 349-3361
Assistant, Kathy:  (not gov)
(This office is sympathetic and wants to hear from us!)

4) Fairfax County Executive, Anthony Griffin, 703-324-2536

5) Governor Elect Bob McDonnell

6) Chairman Sharon Bulova (Fairfax County Board of Supervisors)
(Keep up the volume contacts. Tell her you are unhappy the hunts have started, that you want them stopped…)

Outreach focus
We suggest that you forward to the list of contacts above whatever communications you have already made to local officials with a note indicating you have received no response and would appreciate assistance.

For those willing and able to distribute flyers, we have had a generous donation of 800 printed flyers available, the attached pdf flyers may also be downloaded and printed and/or emailed.

Finally, it is critical that everyone attend the public meeting of the Park Authority Board this Thursday, November 19th at 7pm. The location is the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway Fairfax.

Please cross-post and distribute to everyone who may be willing to participate in the effort to compel Fairfax County to reconsider a practice which is ineffective, unjustified and inhumane and begin the process of developing a policy that reflects the citizens’ expectations that our county take a leadership role in this issue and move forward, not backward.
