A DePere man is in stable condition after being attacked by a bear he shot Friday in Lincoln County.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, it happened while Christopher Halfmann, 39, was hunting with friends in the Town of Harding, northwest of Merrill.
He shot the bear, but then the animal attacked him before running off.
Halfmann was taken to Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center in Merrill before being transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Green Bay.
The hunting group returned to the scene and later found the injured bear and killed it. The bear will be tested for rabies which is standard.
The Dept. of Natural Resources is taking over the investigation.
