Two brothers from New Castle received $300 in tickets for allegedly driving on a trail easement near the Filoha Meadows Nature Preserve and then walking through the pristine area to access national forest land for elk hunting.

Bryan and Tyler Cloninger ignored numerous signs that say unauthorized vehicles are prohibited when they drove a pickup truck on the trail on Sept. 24, said John Armstrong, Pitkin County’s senior open space ranger, on Friday. The driver received a $100 ticket.

The bow-hunting brothers were also ticketed $100 each for leaving a path through the preserve. The county has a zero-tolerance policy toward those who leave the trail, meaning the fine is mandatory.
