CHICO, Calif. – A bill introduced by District 1 Assemblywoman Heather Hadwick could allow parents to pass their unused deer tags to certain family members. Hadwick says the bill is meant to expand hunting education.
In an Action News Now interview, Hadwick said it’s a way for parents to teach their kids about hunting. Hadwick shared that her own son, who’s now 21, never pulled a deer tag and that their family was fortunate to have the means to take him to Montana for his first deer hunt.
Hadwick thinks kids should be able to hunt with their families in California. She also believes older relatives or veterans who don’t have their own tag should be able to enjoy deer hunting, too.
“We’re one generation away from these kids not even knowing what they’ve missed,” Hadwick said.
Hikers in Upper Bidwell Park told Action News Now they generally agreed with the bill. Carlos Ramirez, a Paradise resident, said he’s not a hunter and doesn’t necessarily like hunting, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t think people deserve the right to hand off their hunting tag to a family member.
“Just like you would any sort of pistol,” Ramirez said.
Liam Manning, a Chico resident, said if it’s of use to them and it’s a safe thing to do, it sounds like there’s no problem with it. He added that if it’s something that benefits them, then it sounds like a useful thing to be able to do.
Under the current law, you’re not allowed to transfer your hunting tag to another person.
Assembly Bill 2207 is now headed to committee.
