AN OFFICIAL ban on hunting and fishing in a US state is one step closer after thousands publicly confirmed their support.
A proposal that would see hunting, fishing and animal slaughter banned can now be put forward to voters after 140,000 signatures were submitted.

Thousands have put signatures forward in favour of a hunting ban (stock photo) Credit: AlamySupporters of the Initiative Petition 28 put the proposal forward to the Oregon Secretary of State’s Office in a bid to finalize the bans.
An announcement made on July 2 confirmed that the petition, also known as the PEACE Act, had been turned in as part of the campaign’s third attempt to qualify for ballot voting.
The state of Oregon is now required to verify the signatures and decide whether the campaign qualifies for the November general election.
Officials have until August 2 to confirm whether voters will have their say on the campaign, which was created in 2020.

If successful, the ban would mean the state’s animal cruelty laws extend to farm animals as well as wild animals and those used in research.
David Michelson, one of the campaign’s chief petitioners, said: “We’re asking, let’s make the default option not kill animals.
“It is trying to shift all of us together,” he added.
The proposal has faced criticism from those in the agricultural sector as well as business owners and hunting and fishing enthusiasts.

Those opposing the ban say that it could damage industries that rely on animals such as farming and commercial fishing.
Others have highlighted that hunting and fishing for leisure creates family bonds and community connections.
Portland restaurant owner, Meinert Wachsmuth, says that people should have a “choice” and that the bans should not be imposed.
He told Katu News : “The business implications are definitely going to be challenging if that were to pass.
“I think it has more of an impact on families. Hunting and fishing create bonds you can’t find anywhere else.”
