Fatal Accident: Hobby Hunter in the Canton of St. Gallen – Wild beim Wild

56-Year-Old Plunges Down Embankment in Car
On Monday, 30 October 2023, shortly after 7 p.m., a fatal traffic accident occurred above Walenstadtberg.
A 56-year-old hobby hunter went off the road in his car and plunged down an embankment. The emergency responders who attended the scene could only confirm the man’s death.
Returning from a Hobby Hunt
The 56-year-old man had been out above Walenstadtberg on a recreational hunt targeting living beings, together with two other hobby hunters. The hobby hunters had each independently taken up positions at different locations. The 56-year-old drove alone in his car to the Tschingla alpine hut. After dark, his two companions met up and waited there for him. When he failed to appear and could no longer be reached, the companions alerted the emergency services.
It is known today that in St. Gallen and elsewhere, the primary focus is, much like in a travel agency, on organising attractive hunts. The number of violations of hunting legislation and the numerous reports filed speak a clear language of criminal intent.
Circumstances of the Accident Under Investigation
According to current findings, the deceased went off the unpaved road in his car on the return journey from the hobby hunt for reasons as yet unknown. The car plunged down an embankment and rolled over several times, during which the 56-year-old man was presumably thrown from the vehicle and fatally injured. The exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated by specialists from the St. Gallen Cantonal Police.
Interest Group Wild beim Wild
The IG Wild beim Wild is a non-profit interest group committed to the sustainable and non-violent improvement of the human-animal relationship, with a particular specialisation in the legal aspects of wildlife protection. One of our primary concerns is to introduce a contemporary and serious wildlife management system in the cultivated landscape, modelled on the Canton of Geneva — without hobby hunters, but with upright game wardens who truly deserve the title and act according to a code of honour. The monopoly on the use of force belongs in the hands of the state. The IG supports scientific methods of immunocontraception for wildlife.
