Officials are hoping that the program will incentivize hunters to recruit and teach others safe ways to hunt.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced that applications are open for hunters interested in its recruitment and reactivation grant program.
The Hunter Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation grant program “supports projects that promote awareness, understanding and participation in safe, ethical hunting and hunting-related outdoor skills.”

Under the grant program, the state’s DNR will give out a total of $75,000 in grant funding.
“Individual grant awards are normally limited to $25,000,” the Wisconsin DNR said.

“Cost-sharing funds can be awarded to individuals or community-based organizations, Wisconsin tribes, universities and schools.”
The Wisconsin DNR hopes that the grant program will encourage individuals, organizations, and schools across the state to teach, train, and develop safe and ethical hunters.
According to the Wisconsin DNR, the grant program will act as a reimbursement meaning that all costs must be paid by the individual or organization hoping for the grant before they apply for it.
“No grant advances are possible. It is possible for grantees to request partial (quarterly) reimbursements of the DNR during the life of the project,” the state’s DNR said.

Hunters across Wisconsin have until September 15 to submit an application for the grant program.
“Applicants should plan to start projects approximately one year from the application deadline.”
Data from the Wisconsin DNR shows that in 2025, there were 790,044 deer hunting license sales.
“Excellent public land deer hunting opportunities are available throughout the state,” the DNR said.
“Lands open to public hunting come in all shapes, sizes, habitat types and deer densities.”
