Ala juvenile charged in black bear shooting

January 29, 2011

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – Authorities say a juvenile is charged with killing a protected black bear in Mobile County.

The state conservation department says a bear carcass was discovered in woods near Creola. Evidence indicated the animal was killed shortly before Thanksgiving and dumped in the forest.

Authorities said Friday a juvenile had been charged with violating the Alabama Black Bear Protection Act for allegedly killing the animal. The suspect’s name wasn’t released because of his age.

A conviction on the misdemeanor charge could result in a $5,000 fine and a jail term as long as one year. State authorities can also seize weapons and other hunting gear and revoke hunting privileges for three years.
