Area man dies on hunting trip Bruce Cadwalader of Shavertown was hunting goats in Alaska and fell from a cliff, said state police.

A Shavertown man who was hunting goats in Alaska was killed when he slipped and fell from a cliff, according to Alaska State Police in Anchorage.

Beth Ipsen, spokeswoman for the state police, said Bruce Cadwalader, 53, was returning to a hunting camp in Kaiugnak Bay with a guide on Thursday when he lost his footing and fell down an approximately 50-foot cliff into a ravine.

Ipsen said Cadwalader had traveled to Alaska alone to take part in the hunting trip. Police are not sure what caused Cadwalader to slip.

“They were on their way back to the hunting camp. It appears they were walking in the dark. The guide heard him shout and found him at the bottom of a steep cliff,” Ipsen said.

Ipsen said the guide was able to reach Cadwalader and attempted to resuscitate him, but the effort failed. The guide then climbed out of the ravine and contacted police.

Rescue personnel responded to the scene via a helicopter provided by the U.S. Coast Guard and airlifted Cadwalader’s body from the ravine.

Ipsen said no foul play is suspected. Cadwalader’s body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Anchorage. Officials from the office could not be reached for comment Monday regarding whether an autopsy would be performed.
