John Mortensen was turkey hunting March 20 east of Newport when his climbing tree stand broke causing him to fall. As he fell his foot became caught in a strap on the foot platform which left him helplessly upside down.
John’s phone was in a side pocket of his pants and after approximately six hours of hanging upside down he was able to reach the phone and call for help.
Mortensen was cut free from the tree and extricated from the area using Fire Rescue extrication equipment. He was loaded into an ambulance for transportation to the medical helicopter.
