GRAND HAVEN, MI — A concerned citizen called authorities and set in motion a law enforcement response, surveillance, investigation and prosecution that resulted in four Michigan poachers receiving heavy fines, reimbursement penalties, lengthy probation, and a loss of their hunting rights.
For hunting illegally over bait, and slaughtering 58 ducks in one session, each of the four men was ordered to pay $5,000 in reimbursement and a $10 judgment fee.
There’s more. They each will pay $880 in fines and court costs, and serve 18 months of probation. They also lost their hunting privileges for the next three years. A violation of any of the terms of their probation will have them facing jail time.
And the firearms used in this poaching caper were confiscated and will be put up for auction.
The men — Tyler John Meerman, 24; Colson Thomas Modderman, 22; Justin Allen Beckman, 20; and Michael Duane Sorenson III, 20 — poached 35 wood ducks and 23 mallards, including 13 mallard hens.
