A bow hunter is in stable condition in a Saskatoon hospital after being attacked by a black bear in northern Saskatchewan.
It happened Monday evening in a wooded area near the community of Weirdale.
The hunter was in a tree stand hunting elk on private land when a female black bear with cubs wandered into the area.
The bear saw the hunter in the tree, climbed it, and attacked him.
He was able to fight off the attack but was seriously injured.
The hunter was able to get to his truck and seek medical attention.
Parkland Ambulance said paramedics treated the 39-year-old for his injuries and then took him to Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. He was later transferred to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.
The Ministry of Environment said the bear may have been injured.
Conservation officers have been unable to locate the bear and have set several live traps in the area along with warning signs.
Weirdale is approximately 190 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
