Why Hunters Must Wear Fluorescent Orange Or Pink In Wyoming

You’re heading out on a bird hunt, or a big-game rifle hunt, and you get busted by a Wyoming Game and Fish Department Game Warden without wearing orange (or pink); you just got a ticket. Dang, all you needed to do was put on a fluorescent orange (or pink) article of clothing, and you would’ve been just fine.
Fluorescent orange became known to the hunting world in the 1960s. Before that, hunters tested different colors to see which stood out most and added another layer of safety. The Fort Devens experiment involved 1,100 men from the Army’s Strategic Army Corps who participated in field tests to see which colors stood out most, and blaze orange was the only color never confused with another. Even those with some form of color blindness had no trouble identifying the color.
Those field tests helped shape hunters’ safety in most states, but not all. Wyoming is one of the states that requires hunters during firearm hunting seasons to wear at least one piece of Blaze Orange or Hunter Pink (introduced in 2018 as a legal hunting color in Wyoming) clothing.
You don’t have to be wearing orange or pink from head to toe, just one piece. That means you must wear a hat, vest, coat, jacket, Sweatshirt, or sweater when you’re hunting with a firearm, or if you’re archery hunting during firearm season.
The fine for not wearing your orange or pink may not be huge, but it could open the door to a long list of violations. Wear orange or pink, carry your license and hunter safety course information, have your conservation stamp, properly tag your game, and don’t trespass; then, if a game warden approaches you, you likely won’t be held up long.
Obviously, the rules aren’t the same in every state, so if you’re hunting outside of Wyoming, you should be up to date on that particular state’s regulations and rules.
