The arrests were made near the Bhalpahari beat after a forest team received information about suspected poaching activity. Officials said they found the accused butchering a three-year-old male spotted deer, believed to have been caught in wire snares laid inside the forest.

“The team seized around 500 grams of venison, steel wire snares, wooden traps, nylon ropes, three axes and blood-stained containers believed to have been used during the hunt, said an official statement by forest department.

The accused — Kamleshu, Shyamlal, Sanat, Maniram, Ganpat, Mangal and Bisru — were held under provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and produced before a court in Kabirdham, which remanded them to judicial custody.

Let this be a stern warning: any individual attempting to compromise the sanctity of our wildlife will face the full force of the law.”

The latest arrests come amid intensified surveillance in central Chhattisgarh’s forest divisions, where patrolling has been increased along with intelligence gathering to curb poaching of herbivores such as spotted deer, which form an important prey base for large carnivores.

Forest officials said investigators are trying to ascertain whether the seven were part of a larger hunting network supplying bushmeat or if they had been involved in similar offences earlier. The carcass and seized equipment have been sent for examination as part of the investigation.
