Federal wildlife officials have completed a two-week coyote trapping effort in Emerald Isle, resulting in the removal of three animals, according to the Town of Emerald Isle.

Biologists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service conducted trapping at multiple town-owned and private properties in late February and early March.

This comes after the Town of Emerald Isle reintroduced a managed deer harvest event during this deer season, something it last conducted in 2023 as part of ongoing efforts to monitor and reduce the local deer population.

Officials said the low number of coyotes captured was likely due to the timing of the effort. Trapping began later than ideal, after the species’ mating season, which can reduce effectiveness, the Town of Emerald Isle said.
