Hunter killed in accidental shooting, police say

DULARGE — A 34-year-old man was killed this morning in what police said was a hunting accident near Carencro Lake.

Michael Luke, of Dularge, was shot in the head after he stood up in the line of fire of his 26-year-old cousin, according to a news release from the Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office.

Luke and his cousin were part of a group of four relatives hunting nutria from an airboat, said Maj. Malcolm Wolfe, a spokesman for the Terrebonne Sheriff’s Office.

The cousin, who Wolfe would not identify, was taking aim with a 12-gauge shotgun at a nutria in the area of Biscuit Bayou, near Carencro Lake about 16 miles west of the Falgout Canal Marina off La. 315.

Deputies were called to a boat launch near Falgout Canal about 9:10 a.m. Luke was dead when they arrived, Wolfe said.

No charges have been filed, and there is no indication alcohol played a role in the shooting, Wolfe said. Investigators have ruled the death an accident and “there is no reason to suspect foul play,” the news release states .
