Accidental shooting victim in critical condition
According to the Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, Robert Service, 33, of Rainier, Ore. is in the Intensive Care Unit after being shot by his fiancée Wednesday in a hunting accident in southern Douglas County.
Service was out hunting near Milo, Ore., when his fiancée, Kristina Shockley, 20, also of Rainier, shot a buck. After locating the animal, it was found to be still alive.
She was in the process of reloading to shoot the deer again, and when she closed the bolt on the .270 Winchester, the gun fired, sending one round into Service’s leg.
A Life Flight helicopter was brought in to remove Service, after rescue workers had to pack him to a location where the chopper could land. A National Guard chopper was also dispatched from Salem to assist, but was called off after rescue workers found a place where the Life Flight helicopter could land.
Service was listed as being in critical condition in the ICU Thursday morning.
