Rescuers save lost teen hunter

Nov 30, 2010.

The life of a 15-year-old boy was spared early Sunday morning after rescuers found the lost hunter eight miles north of Troy at the bottom of a snowy, 600-foot canyon on the Yaak River.

Adam Stindt of Troy was located at 3:45 a.m., beneath a tree alongside the Yaak River about two miles from the Kootenai River, Terry Crooks of David Thompson Search and Rescue said Monday.

Rescuers noted from Stindt’s tracks that he had waded into the river, perhaps in an effort to avoid the steep, brushy embankment. With the snow coming down and temperatures hovering at about 28 degrees, his tennis shoes and cotton clothing froze around him, causing severe hypothermia. He stopped under a tree and could no longer move his legs.

“Had our people not been able to get to him he might not have made it to dawn,” Crooks said. “. He was really cold and really wet, and he didn’t have adequate clothing.”
