6 Hunters Hit By Shotgun Blasts

DES MOINES, Iowa — Six hunters were wounded in Iowa hunting accidents over the weekend. Department of Natural Resources officials said all six were expected to survive their injuries.

In Polk County, John White, 46, of Altoona, was hit in the arm by a shotgun slug while hunting Sunday afternoon near Polk City. The DNR said White was in a party of 20 to 25 hunters when a man took a shot at a running deer. The slug entered White’s bicep, perhaps after passing through the deer. White was being treated at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He was listed as good condition on Monday.
A Clive man was shot and wounded by a fellow hunter this weekend. It’s one of four shooting mishaps by hunters over the weekend. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said James Wrage, 42, of Clive, was shot in the leg Sunday afternoon while pheasant hunting in Clarke County. The DNR said two men shot at a pheasant, but hit Wrage in the leg instead. He was taken to Clarke County Hospital in Osceola and later transferred to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. He was listed in good condition on Monday.
A Mingo man also shot himself in the foot while hunting in Warren County late Sunday afternoon, the DNR reported. The DNR said Orville Morton Sr., 67, was hunting deer near Milo when the shotgun he was handling discharged, hitting him in the foot. He is being treated at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was listed in good condition on Monday.
A 15-year-old was shot in the ankle while deer hunting Sunday in Jefferson County. The DNR said Nazareth Rambo was hunting with about seven other hunters when a shotgun slug fired by another hunter hit him in the ankle. Rambo was treated and released at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.
A 22-year-old man was hit by a shotgun slug in Palo Alto County. And a shotgun slug fired by another hunter struck a Minnesota man in one of his hips.
This weekend’s shootings come one week after a man was shot and killed by a fellow hunter in Mahaska County. In that incident, Christopher Durham, 41, of Marion County, was hit in the chest by a fellow hunter who was shooting at a running deer.
