Soldier shot in hunting accident

A Fort Riley soldier sustained a single gunshot wound to the leg Thursday morning when he was struck by a bullet fired by a man hunting elk near the west side of the military installation north of Junction City.
Officials said the soldier, who was not identified, received immediate first-aid treatment from fellow soldiers who were training in the area. He was transported to Geary Community Hospital by ambulance, then airlifted to Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka. He later was transferrred to the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City for further treatment.
The soldier’s condition wasn’t immediately available Thursday afternoon.
Geary County Sheriff’s officers questioned a Manhattan resident who fired the shot and determined he was hunting legally in an area near Old US Highway 77 and Range Road. The man, who authorities did not identify, was hunting alone at the time.
Geary County Sheriff Jim Jensen said no criminal charges were expected to be filed.
