‘Not my day’: Missing hunter found after fall
Goshen — A hunter lay injured in the woods for more than 15 hours on Nov. 30 before being rescued.
The Town of Goshen Police Department received a call from the hunter’s wife at approximately 8:15 p.m. She said John Sappah, 62, of Goshen, left before dawn and never returned.
The police found Sappah’s vehicle on Greencrest Drive. Responders set up a mobile command center and launched a search.
Searchers from the town police department, the Goshen Fire Department, and the New York State Police Aviation Unit found him at about 11:20 p.m. He was over a half-mile into the woods and seriously injured, police said.
Sappah told police that he fell about 20 feet from a tree stand at approximately 8 a.m., and that he was unable to move because of his injuries.
Because of the rough terrain, it took another hour to transport Sappah out of the woods. He was taken to Orange Regional Medical Center’s Arden Hill campus in Goshen. At about 4 a.m. he was moved to Westchester Medical Center to be treated for his injuries, which included a fractured pelvis.
As it happens, Suppah was involved in a car-deer accident that morning, which the town police also handled. He told an officer, “This must not be my lucky day.”.
