WASHINGTON TWP. _ An Edison man perched in a hunter’s tree stand off of East
Mill Road allegedly struck Long Valley Village retail buildings four times
and narrowly missed a policeman before he was arrested on Friday, Nov. 26.
Lt. Arthur Adams said gun shots were reported behind Long Valley Village
just after noon on Friday.
An investigation resulted in the arrest of David Iacobone, 37, but not
before four rifled slugs fired from a tree blind across an open field hit
the back of the stores.
Officer Scott Myers, who responded to the scene, was almost struck by a
shell.
Another person in the vicinity also was nearly hit, according to police.
Walls Struck
Adams said one round broke a rear window, two others were embedded in the
store walls and others were found on the ground near the buildings.
Asked how close the shells had come to Myers, Adams said it was impossible
to tell.
“He heard it whiz by his ear, so I would say that’s pretty close,” Adams
said
Iacobone was charged with fourth degree criminal mischief, creating a risk
of widespread injury, also a fourth degree charge, and disorderly conduct.
The tree blind was apparently on the property of Ronald Oringer, 74 East
Mill Road.
He was unavailable for comment.
Iacobone was released in his own recognizance pending a future hearing in
the municipal court.
