Vt. charges 2 with illegal bear hunting technique
WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) – The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says two Connecticut men are facing charges they used bait to hunt bear. State game wardens say they located a large bait pile of apples and acorns in Jay that was coated with an attractant.
Forty-nine-year-old David Such of Enfield and 49-year-old Charles LaFountain of Somers were arrested on Sunday in the town of Jay, near the Canadian border, after wardens began watching the bait pile.
Wardens say Such was arrested when he climbed into a tree stand over the bait pile. LaFountain was arrested nearby.
A number of other bait piles were found near a camp the two men were using. If convicted, they could get 60 days in jail and lose their right to hunt in Vermont for three years. .
