Three Cited For Illegal Hunting in Saline County

A “decoy” operation by officers from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in rural Saline County leads to three people being cited for illegal hunting.
Natural Resource Officer Greg Salisbury tells KSAL News that complaints from landowners about illegal hunting prompted his department to set up a robotic deer decoy in a field, near a road in rural Saline County.
The decoy was set about about two hours before sundown Thursday evening.
Salisbury says that only three vehicles passed by the area. But each vehicle stopped, and a person shot at the deer. In two instances the shooter got out and fired from the road. In the third instance the shooter fired from the vehicle.
Salisbury says that two adult males and a 15-year-old boy were all cited for hunting without permission from the landowner, and for not displaying hunter orange. Each person’s gun was also seized.
The robotic decoy used was purchased with money donated through a bow hunting sportsman group.
Salisbury adds that decoy operations like these are usually prompted by complaints about illegal hunting. In this instance a landowner complained after a bullet fired from the road went “whizzing by” a friend who was legally hunting in the field.
