A Kitsap County man died near Tarboo Lake in Jefferson County on Oct. 27 after falling from a tree while deer hunting.
Gerald Dizon, 66, of Silverdale was hunting in Jefferson County accompanied by Joseph Costello, 58, of Poulsbo.
The pair were hunting north of Tarboo Lake, which is about 15 miles from Port Townsend.
Dizon had climbed a tree using a series of spikes, according to Joe Nole, JCSO chief criminal deputy. For undetermined reasons, Dizon fell from the tree, a drop of 25 feet, Nole said.
About noon, Dizon was located. Inquiries were made about possible helicopter airlift from the U.S. Navy. An ambulance was brought to the scene, but due to the rough terrain, could only get within 100 yards.
Dizon, who Nole said suffered internal injuries from his fall, was being carried towards the ambulance when emergency responders had to stop to perform CPR. Dizon died before he could be prepared for medical transport.
Nole said Dizon’s rifle was hanging by a rope in the tree. He said it’s a common practice for hunters to lower their guns to the ground and then descend. He said it’s possible Dizon slipped while descending.
