MECHANICSBURG, Ohio (WDTN) – A 17-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in Columbus after a hunting trip in Champaign County ended in a freak accident late Tuesday night.

The 17-year old victim accidentally fell on his hunting knife, leaving a gash in his leg. This was off State Route 56 outside of Mechanicsburg.

Derek Fullen, the victim’s friend, said his friend was losing a lot of blood and they started to make their way out of the woods.

“I used a leather belt to tourniquet his leg,” said Fullen. “We were about a mile back from the road when he gashed himself, and he started going into shock. I had to carry him the rest of the way up.
