SAN ANGELO, Texas — Menard High School junior Jonathan Burgess was involved in a hunting accident late Friday night and is in “stable but critical condition” after being air-lifted to Shannon Medical Center, according to Menard County Sheriff Buck Miller.

Burgess is a star running back at Menard and was recently honored on the Standard-Times’ All-West Texas Class 1A Football Team.

According to Miller, Burgess was rabbit hunting with some friends near Fort McKavett when he was shot in the back of the head with a 22-caliber rifle in a “freak accident.” The father of one of Burgess’s friends was also present.

Miller said the last report he received indicated Burgess was able to squeeze the hands of his mother and father at the hospital, and that he was able to breathe on his own.
