BRUNSWICK, Md. – A Brunswick man is recovering after having to swim and walking to safety in 20 degree weather.

Just after 10:00 a.m., the Maryland Natural Resources Police responded to a boating accident that occurred on the Potomac River near Brunswick.

The investigation revealed that Franklin D. Williams, 25, was out waterfowl hunting by himself when the canoe he was in capsized in a strong current.

Williams was able to swim ashore and hike about 300 yards, in near 20 degrees, to Winner Road on the Virginia side of the river.

A passerby drove Williams to a waiting ambulance near Brunswick. Williams was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and released.
