Two La Crosse police officers pleaded guilty Friday to federal charges for illegally hunting ducks.
Faling Yang, 42, and Corrie Korn, 43, face up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine when sentenced May 16, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The men committed a federal crime October 6, 2009, while they were operating a commercial guiding company on the National Wildlife Refuge on the Mississippi River. They intentionally killed and transported ducks, which was witnessed by an undercover agent, the department stated. Both violated state law and the federal Lacey Act, which protects certain animals and wildlife from illegal hunting.
United States Attorney John Vaudreuil noted that Lacey Act prosecutions are critical to ensuring that hunters and non-hunters can enjoy the use of the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
Yang and Korn each also agreed not to guide any hunters or hunt for two years and pay a $5,000 fine.
