Karen Stephenson and Melinda Diment are thankful to be alive.
The two friends, both of Midland, survived a harrowing experience late Sunday afternoon while deer hunting on private land near the corner of Jefferson and Letts roads — during the rainstorm that was accompanied by high winds which caused extensive damage and power outages in the area.
As Stephenson and Diment sat in a hunting blind in a tree about 20 feet above the ground, the strong wind caused the tree that held the blind to split, and the wind carried the blind out of the tree, turned it upside down, and brought it crashing to the ground with the two women inside.
After waiting several minutes for the storm to die down, Stephenson and Diment were able to walk away from the destroyed blind, albeit with many bruises and with Diment sustaining a sprained wrist and Stephenson a hurt shoulder.
