A Navarre man who shot and killed a dog, tied it to the back of his vehicle and dragged it down a road in December was given a year’s probation Monday.
James Sousa, 49, shot the dog near a hunting camp on Indian Ford Road near Munson Highway in Santa Rosa County, prosecutors said.
Sousa was arrested in Dec. 19 on a felony cruelty to animals charge.
Prosecutors later changed the charges to misdemeanor cruelty and leaving a carcass on the side of the road.
He pleaded no contest to the charges on May 8 and was sentenced Monday to a year of probation by County Judge Robert Hilliard. His hunting privileges were also revoked for a year, and he had to forfeit his rifle and scope, Assistant State Attorney James Parker said.
