2 Vt. men facing deer poaching charges

WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) — Vermont wildlife officials say two men are due in court next month to answer charges they used a spotlight and vehicle headlights to shoot deer out of season.
Game wardens say 38-year-old Simon “Peter” Mears of Randolph and 26-year-old James Lumbra of Granville were cited after someone reported hearing gunshots after dark on Dec. 11 in Chelsea.
They are each charged with three counts of taking big game by illegal means.
Wardens say officers encountered Mears as he attempted to recover two of the deer that had been shot after legal hunting hours.
If convicted, Mears and Lumbra could each face up to 60 days in jail, lose their hunting equipment and lose their rights to fish, hunt and trap for three years.
They are due in court Feb. 9.
